The representative of the Japan branch must have an address in Japan.

A Japanese branch cannot be established by non-residents alone. The representative of the Japan branch must have an address in Japan. In other words, if the person who is going to be the representative of the Japanese branch is a foreigner, they must be a foreigner already living in Japan legally with some kind of status of residence. The law has been revised so that the representative of a joint-stock company can be an overseas resident. Also, the representative of the Japanese branch does not have to be an officer of the foreign company (head office). Furthermore, since it is not necessary to be an employee of a foreign company (headquarters), it is possible to have a newly hired person become the representative of the Japanese branch. Of course, it is also possible to appoint an officer/employee of a foreign company (headquarters) to represent a Japanese branch.
